During orthodontic treatment, unexpected problems or injuries involving your appliances can occur. At Evans Orthodontics, we want you to be prepared. Orthodontic emergencies typically fall into two main categories: appliance-related issues and direct injuries to the mouth or teeth.
Appliance-Related Emergencies
Braces or orthodontic appliances may occasionally become loose, bent, or irritated. If you experience any of the following issues, please contact our office during patient hours to schedule an appointment. For the convenience of all patients, we handle emergencies by appointment only.
Common Appliance Issues
Irritating Tie Wire: If a tie wire irritates your mouth, cover it with beeswax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or Q-tip.
Loose Bands or Brackets: A loose band or bracket can generally be left in place until you visit our office. Please call Evans Orthodontics during patient hours when you notice a loose band or bracket. We will schedule you to reattach the loose appliance if necessary.
Broken or Poking Archwire: A broken or poking archwire can often be bent in with a pencil eraser or trimmed with clean nail clippers. If you feel the problem has not been appropriately resolved, contact our office during patient hours.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth and Teeth
If you sustain a direct injury to your mouth or teeth, the first step is to apply ice to the affected area. Contact your regular dentist promptly, as they may need to perform an X-ray to assess the injury’s severity.
Key Steps to Take
Knocked-Out or Fractured Teeth: If a tooth has been displaced, knocked out, or fractured, it is best to contact your family dentist first. They have the necessary materials and anesthesia to provide treatment.
Dislodged Appliances: If your appliances are dislodged or displaced, we will need to replace or adjust them as soon as possible after you have seen your general dentist, depending on your comfort level.
